At
an altitude of 1,326 metres Briançon is the highest town in
Europe. Five river valleys, those of the Durance, Guisane, Cerveyette,
Clarée and Ayes, converge within the vicinity of
Briançon itself and provide natural route ways through the
high Alpine ranges.
Renowned
for its exceptional climate, Briançon has nearly 300 days of
sunshine a year much to the pleasure of visitors all seasons round.
During winter, skiers are
enjoy the 250km of slopes at the Serre-Chevalier ski resort.
During Summer, a whole range of
activities are possible, walking, climbing, canyoning, mountain biking,
cycling, tennis, water sports, canoeing, rafting, paraglyder,
hydrospeed, fishing and swimming.
Close
to the Italian border, Briançon has been a strategically
important town. Built to ward off invaders, Briançon has
preserved remarkable fortifications designed in the 18th century by
Vauban, the most famous French military engineer.With its monuments,
frescoes and sculptured wooden doors encountered at every turn of its
winding streets, Briançon has won its place among the towns
of art and history.
Situated
in the heart of the French Alps, you can just as easily come across
lavender, typical of the Southern Alps, as you can find the soft green
vegetation from the Northern Alps in valleys surrounding
Briançon.
